If you have been fishing at Waihau bay before, you will know it is an absolutely stunning fishery. What has made Waihau bay so special over the last few years is the huge increase in recreational Bluefin Tuna fishing. During the Winter months you will see hundreds of boats flock to Waihau to have a shot at catching one of the best eating fish in the world.

We have been lucky enough to experience this fishery first hand, with many successful trips over the last few years; much to our family and friend’s delight when we bring home a treat of Bluefin Tuna to enjoy. One fish goes a long way so we try to fish well within our the day limit and release the rest!

However, this year was something pretty spectacular. The fishing was absolutely insane. We had two days of fishing. The first day we headed out in the morning only to get a double strike of small Bluefin first thing in the morning. It was pretty quiet after that. The next day, we went back to the same area, where it was all on. The fish were thick on the Garmin sounder and every drive through the marks we had double and triple hook ups!

We ended up catching 14 Bluefin over the two days. If not for our tired crew, we could have stayed and caught many more. However, our crew were done for the day and keen to hit the Waihau Bay pub for a cold beer and feed from the kitchen.

Massive thanks to my crew this year, mates and family, who joined us for som eabsolutely insane Bluefin Tuna 2023 Winter fishing!

CHOICE OF LURES:

During this trip we put to test the new range of Purple G lures. All three lures accounting for multiple fish. It has been awesome to see so many people who have purchased these lures having success on Bluefin Tuna this Winter too. Check out the pics!

RODS & REELS

Our choice of gear for this trip were the Shimano Tiagra’s paired with a mixture of standard and adjustable bent butt Abyss rods.  We found the adjustable bent butts really useful; especially when the fish were low in the water column we could adjust to a lower setting, and likewise when the fish came to the surface, we could easily adjust the angle of the rods. This makes for a far better angler experience.
